Internships
Internships are a critical component of student affairs professional preparation and provide students an opportunity to explore multiple areas of the profession in different institutional settings (i.e. small private, large public).
Program Requirements
HESAA students are required to complete two distinct supervised experiences (150 hours each or 10 hours/week for 15 weeks). Students should enroll in HEA 624 or HEA 625 concurrently with their internship experience. All internships need to be approved in advance by the faculty teaching Supervised Practice I or II respectively. Students should submit an internship position description for review and approval to the faculty of Internship I or Internship II before committing to an experience to ensure you are getting a valuable supervised experience.

Attend the Annual HESAA Internship Fair
This spring semester fair involves 30 plus employers from WNY higher education institutions looking for graduate interns. Expect to submit an updated résumé and a cover letter expressing your interest. You may also be asked to interview for the position.

Contact a director of an office you are interested in interning with and inquire about a possible internship opportunity and arrange an informational interview.
National Summer Internships
Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I)
The ACUHO-I summer internship program provides opportunities for graduate students to work in the areas of residence life, conference services, family housing, facilities, and food service. Students may enroll in Internship I or Internship II during the summer session (applications due in January).
Association for Orientation, Transition, Retention in Higher Education (NODA)
The NODA summer internship program provides opportunities for graduate student to work in the areas of orientation, transition and retention. Students will typically assist with summer orientation programs. Students may enroll in Internship I or Internship II during the summer session (applications due in January).
Annual Internship & Open Advising Night
This event is hosted by the HEA department during the Fall semester. Learn about the Internship experience, requirements, and national internship opportunities.
