Robert A. Davis (RAD) Endowed Scholarship
This academic scholarship was founded and named in honor of PFC Robert “Bobby” A. Davis, whose legacy demonstrates honor, integrity and care for family, friends, and comrades. It is intended specifically for students enrolled in Buffalo State’s graduate program in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration (HESAA).

About Robert A. Davis
After graduating from high school in 1960, Robert A. “Bobby” Davis, was drafted to serve his country and to preserve freedom around the world. He died a decorated American hero, with valor, for shielding his comrades in the infamous battle of Ia Drang; a battle that changed the Vietnam War. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, an award bestowed upon members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone.

About the Award
This academic scholarship is designed to offset educational expenses related to attendance at a national, regional or international conference of higher education. It may also be used for Professional Development opportunities related to the profession. HESAA students create learning environments which foster equitable participation and lead lives of integrity which include continuous learning, growth, and professional development as they embrace meaningful professional partnerships to make a difference in the lives of others.
Eligibility
- Currently enrolled students in the HESAA program
- Completed at least 6 credit hours and no more than 18 credits hours towards the master's degree
- Maintained a 3.5 GPA at the time of application
- Evidence of volunteer and extracurricular service-related activities beyond job-related accomplishments
Review Process
Applications are reviewed by a national committee consisting of HEA alumni along with Davis family members, including a Chair of the Board and one HEA faculty member as non-voting participants.
Stipends
The Robert A. Davis Scholarship is endowed. The number of awards and the amount of stipends will vary each year based on available funds.

Essay
Your 1000-word essay must include:
- Examples of how volunteerism and/or extracurricular service-related activities beyond job-related or academic accomplishments helped to prepare you to become a more caring and responsible citizen. Discuss what you gained from offering your time, skills, energy, intelligence, and commitment to address a human concern or issue.
- Academic achievement and goals
- Statement of how the funds will be used
- Statement identifying one to two goals for working in the field of Higher Education or Student Affairs
Note: Volunteerism helps colleges and universities make good on their pledge to serve society, to benefit another person, social agency, charitable organization, or group, for no financial, social, or political gain.
Reference Letters
Two references letters must be included:
Reference Letter 1: Supports/affirms your commitment to service beyond job related responsibilities. It may come from an employer/supervisor, graduate assistant or intern supervisor, or faculty member (other than HEA department chair).
Reference Letter 2: Supports/affirms your volunteerism qualities/experiences, including how your service made a difference to those served. It may come from a volunteer supervisor, a fellow volunteer who served with you on a project, or someone helped by your volunteer service.
References letters must be submitted directly from the recommender:
